Travel to any city should involve a visit to open markets, and in Uruguay, Feria de Tristán Narvaja is no exception. Every Sunday in downtown Montevideo from the early morning to late afternoon, hundreds of vendors sell a bevy of products, from fresh vegetables and cheeses to trinkets and souvenirs and most interestingly, antiques and vintage goods. Many antiques, dating to the first half of the 20th century when Uruguay was one of the world’s wealthier nations, are available for haggling and purchase. If you are comfortable with your Spanish and are patient, you can find good deals. If the thought of negotiating in a language other than your own terrifies you, this market is still we worth visiting: it gives some insight into what this small but fascinating country is all about. Feria de Tristán Narvaja is truly a case study of how one’s junk can become another’s treasure.
If you wish to visit, arrive to Montevideo’s Centro relatively early, before 10:00 a.m. By noon the streets get crowded and browsing becomes more of an effort. You can score some of the best deals, and more interesting objects, earlier.
