The fine line between street art and graffiti is quite grey. One man’s brilliance can come across to another as simply filth. And in Montevideo and other cities throughout Uruguay, the endless tagging of public buildings and private homes can be exasperating. From Ciudad Vieja to Pocitos, it is difficult to find a long stretch of building free from the spray paint can. But at the same time, the city is home to some brilliant street art. From the esoteric to the very blunt, these murals and random paintings show the colorful side of Uruguay. I have included a few of my favorites—wandering around Montevideo and viewing these works was a high point of my travel here.
