During my past trips to Uruguay, I had always skipped Punta del Este because I had the impression it was like another Cancun or Miami Beach. Well, there is a degree of truth to that, but Punta is far more than cookie cutter apartment buildings and overpriced restaurants (believe me, there is plenty of that!). The city has beautiful homes and eclectic architecture, stunning beaches, and nearby are plenty of towns and sites worth exploring such as Punta Ballena, Maldonado, José Ignacio and Piriápolis. Best of all, on the peninsula that marks the transition between the Rio Plata and the Atlantic, one can enjoy stunning coastal sunrises and sunsets. I love this shot of a father helping his son out as they are fishing, enjoying sundown near Puerto del Punta del Este. Late afternoons here, even in winter, are sublime if you happen to travel to this region.
