This announcement is coming late, similar to my notice that I left Abu Dhabi, but yes, for a while I will spend some time in Uruguay. I have been here a few times previously, but always for a few days during longer trips to Argentina. This country has always fascinated me. The endless stretch of beach, rolling hills, friendly people, and of course, its scruffy capital, Montevideo, all contribute to the intrigue I have long felt for Uruguay.
Life here is not always easy for its 3+ million citizens, half of whom who live in Montevideo. While the economy has improved overall the past decade, and the country is one of the more stable in Latin America, life is rough for too many of its people. The 2008 financial crisis did a number on the country, and prices keep rising—while salaries come far from catching up. But foreign investment is on the rise. More who are curious about Uruguay visit, and end up staying as they appreciate how this relatively tiny country has its own unique identity and its special place within South America.
So after an intense year in the Middle East, I am looking forward to learning more about this country, its people and current challenges along with the opportunities. Follow the travel, fun, architecture, food and landscape with me on Instagram.
